Location: Take a road trip along the iconic Highway 1 and experience the sun-kissed beaches of Southern California, the majestic beauty of Yosemite National Park and the bustling streets of San Francisco. Explore iconic landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, and marvel at the natural wonders of Big Sur and Yosemite's towering waterfalls.

Day 1 - Arrival in San Francisco

Upon your arrival in San Francisco you can either choose to settle in to your hotel or begin your exploration of the city.

Explore Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, and Ghirardelli Square. Take a ride on the iconic cable cars for a great view of the city or head to the famous Union Square.

Day 2 - San Francisco

Today you could visit Alcatraz Island, board the ferry at Pier 33, and get stunning views of the skyline and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge as you make the short journey across the water.  Guided tours, complete with captivating audio narratives are available, that bring the island's storied past to life, offering insights into the daily lives of both inmates and guards. Amidst the history, you will also find opportunities to appreciate the island's natural beauty, with scenic walks along rugged trails providing panoramic views of the bay. 

In the afternoon walk or cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge, and explore Golden Gate Park.

 

Day 3 - San Francisco

Start the day by immersing yourself in the vibrant streets of Chinatown, the oldest and one of the largest in North America. Wander through bustling markets, filled with colorful displays, and sample authentic delicacies from dim sum to traditional pastries. Next, venture to the Exploratorium, a hands-on science museum that sparks curiosity in visitors of all ages. . Afterward, take a leisurely stroll through the historic neighborhoods of the city, from the picturesque streets of Haight-Ashbury, known for its bohemian spirit and counterculture history, to the charming alleys and colorful murals of the Mission District. Be sure to also marvel at the twists and turns of Lombard Street.

Day 4 - Napa Valley

After collecting your rental car leave the city behind and head for Lake Tahoe in the heart of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Along the way you can choose to enjoy wine tasting at some of the 400 renowned wineries in the Napa Valley region. You can also take a hot air balloon ride for a unique view of the vineyards.

Or, you could also chose to take a mud bath at Calistoga which offers a unique and rejuvenating experience amidst the serene surroundings of California's wine country. Before ending the day at your hotel in Lake Tahoe.

Day 5 - 6 Lake Tahoe

With its crystal-clear waters and surrounding snow-capped peaks, Lake Tahoe offers a stunning backdrop for adventurous outdoor fun. Start your day by heading to one of the many beaches lining the lake's shores, such as Sand Harbor or Zephyr Cove, where children can splash in the cool waters, build sandcastles, and soak up the sun.

Embark on a scenic hike along one of the many trails surrounding the lake. Popular trails include the Rubicon Trail, which offers stunning views of the lake, and the Eagle Falls Trail, and leads to cascading waterfalls and panoramic views.

The charming towns surrounding Lake Tahoe, Truckee and South Lake Tahoe offer a variety of dining options, from cozy cafes to family-friendly restaurants serving up delicious local cuisine.

Day 7 Yosemite National Park

Make the drive today from Lake Tahoe to Yosemite National Park. The drive takes between 3.5 - 4 hours. Once you arrive you can spend the rest of the day exploring the iconic landmarks like El Capitan and Half Dome.

Day 8 - 9 Yosemite National Park

Explore Yosemite National Park with it's awe-inspiring natural beauty and iconic landmarks, towering granite cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and lush forests await. Hike the scenic routes to iconic sights such as Yosemite Falls, Bridalveil Fall, and Lower Yosemite Fall, keeping an eye out for wildlife such as deer, squirrels, and perhaps even the elusive black bear. 

There are also a variety of activities, such as ranger-led programs and Junior Ranger activities, where children can learn about the park's natural and cultural history through interactive experiences. There are also cycle routes or a scenic drive along Glacier Point Road or Tioga Road.

Day 10 - Moneterey

Drive the 3 hours from Yosemite to Monterey and start by exploring the iconic Monterey Bay Aquarium, where you can see a diverse array of marine life, from playful sea otters to majestic sharks. Afterward, take a leisurely stroll along Cannery Row, lined with quaint shops, seafood restaurants, and historic landmarks, offering a glimpse into the city's rich maritime history. Adventurous families can rent bicycles or kayaks to explore the picturesque coastal trails or paddle along the tranquil waters of Monterey Bay.

Next head along the scenic 17-Mile Drive, where you will see breathtaking views of rugged coastline, pristine beaches, and iconic landmarks such as the Lone Cypress await.

Day 11 - Carmel

Carmel-by-the-Sea is a quaint town of enchanting cottages, art galleries, and boutique shops. Where you can take some time to sample gourmet treats, or simply wander through the town's charming alleys and hidden courtyards.

For a dose of nature, head to Carmel Beach, renowned for its soft white sands and stunning views of the rugged coastline. Here, children can play in the gentle surf, build sandcastles, or go tide-pooling along the rocky shore. From here you can explore nearby attractions such as Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, where scenic hiking trails lead to dramatic cliffs, secluded coves, and abundant wildlife sightings. The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, is one of the world's premier whale watching destinations with guaranteed sightings at certain times of the year.

Day 12 - Big Sur

Your journey to the Big Sur takes you on the iconic Pacific Coast Highway, taking in some of California’s most spectacular coastal scenery. Along the way, make stops at scenic overlooks such as Bixby Creek Bridge and McWay Falls, offering stunning photo opportunities.

Big Sur boasts numerous hiking trails suitable for families of all ages. Our favorites include the easy trail to Pfeiffer Falls and Valley View, offering glimpses of towering redwoods and cascading waterfalls, as well as the more challenging trails in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, where you trek through pristine wilderness to secluded beaches and hidden coves.

There is also a cultural side of Big Sur with local galleries, studios, and artisan shops showcasing the work of local artists and craftsmen.

Days 13 - 14 San Diego

Spend the last two days of your California trip on the sun-kissed beaches of Southern California in San Diego. The beaches make for a relaxing time, or chose to visit the San Diego zoo in Balboa Park, home to over 3,500 animals representing more than 650 species.

For those seeking more adrenaline fuelled excitement there are the rides of SeaWorld San Diego, where you can witness incredible marine life up close, or the interactive exhibits and attractions at LEGOLAND California Resort.

Day 15 - San Diego

Today you visit the last attractions of San Diego before returning your rental car to the airport in time for your onward flight.
