Montenegro
Montenegro is like a colourful mosaic, its many fascinating facets combine to create the perfect family holiday.
Montenegro is a small Balkan country that has lots to offer: beautiful beaches, lakes, towns that date back to medieval times, national parks and a marina of super yachts. At just two thirds the size of Wales,it is great for exploring stunning landscapes and seeing nature at its best. Diving, sailing, surfing, fishing or just relaxing, the Montenegrin coast offers numerous possibilities for an active and relaxing holiday.
Along the 300 kilometers of coast you will find a wonderful combination of sun, sea and land with small and large bays.
The quaint, and some say 'spectacular' World Heritage town of Kotor is found in the bay of the same name. For the best views of the town and neighbouring villages a boat ride along the coast has you thinking of Norwegian Fjords. The winding medieval streets and cafes of the beautifully preserved old town and the street music and theatre make it a wonderful venue for keeping the little people constantly entertained.
Not far from Kotor you will find the small town of Risan which is steeped in Roman History. Or, for a slightly livelier scene head to Budva where, outside of the Old Town, you will find a revamped marina that is home to superyachts as well as upmarket restaurants and apartments.
However when you crave some time exploring, go off the beaten track in the rugged mountains of Durmitor and Prokletije. In its area is the Tara Gorge, the deepest canyon in Europe. Here, there are 48 mountain peaks higher than 2,000 meters and 18 lakes, out of which the "Black Lake" is the most famous. The Scutari Lake National Park is home to the largest lake in the Balkans, with about 270 resident species of birds.
The locals are so friendly and will welcome you to their country with open arms. One of the best ways to see everyday life is on a family-guided tour that will give you an insight into how people used to live in a traditional Montenegrin village on the coast.
At Little People Big Adventures we always love to see or get involved with the local festivals and for a small country Montenegro has quite a few. At the start of July, the Festival of Theatre takes place in Kotor and children can take part in workshops or cultural events that take place in the town. In February, the town truly comes alive with the Mardi Gras, a cultural carnival dating back to the middle ages. For one night in mid -August Kotor hosts Boka night, where you will find music and dancing as well as traditional boat painting; this is one definitely not to be missed.
Montenegro makes for a great standalone holiday or combines well with neighbouring Croatia given it’s close proximity to Dubrovnik.

Best time to Visit
If you are looking for warm weather and coastal fun the best time to visit Montenegro is from May through to September. This is when the water is warm enough to swim in and the temperatures are reaching the height of summer. June and September are perhaps the optimum months as the beaches will become less crowded.
