Costa Rica

You will find no shortage of adventure on your family holiday to Costa Rica

The Costa Rican phrase Pura Vida or ‘Pure life’ celebrates the simpler things in life and this is something that you will experience throughout your trip as you embrace the natural environment. As one of the most bio-diverse countries in the world, Costa Rica makes for the perfect family adventure. One quarter of it’s land is protected and it is home to almost 250 species of mammals and more than 900 kinds of birds. There is every chance that you will find playful spider monkeys, colourful macaws, lazy sloths, vibrant toucans and sunbathing iguanas right outside your door.

As an all year round destination it is always a great time to visit; the most difficult decision will be choosing from the wide range of things to see. The climate allows for most of the activities to be outside; zipwire and white water rafting, river safari by raft, hot springs, to evening eco thermal centres, so it is perfect if you are looking for some great outdoor adventures.

Why we love Costa Rica family holidays

  • Encounter the country’s different animals

  • Float along on a Corobici River Safari

  • Meander the canals of Tortuguero

  • Glamp on a quiet beach

  • Snorkel at Cano Island

  • Sky walks through the jungle

  • Sea Kayaking at Manuel Antonio

  • See the lava flow at Arenal

  • Visit the Monteverde Cloud Forest

  • Spend time on the country’s beautiful beaches

It is possible to experience the whole country from coast to coast in 2 weeks, but the drives between places can be quite lengthy so a little strenuous with small people. One way to overcome this is to add some internal flights, or split the country and focus on one half.

Some of the must sees on your trip are, exploring the labyrinth of canals with a local guide in Torteguero National Park on the Northern Caribbean Coast. Arenal volcano is Costa Rica’s most active volcano and many would argue that your trip is not complete unless you have taken in this magnificent sight. This is also a great base for exploring the La fortuna village and waterfall.

All this exploring can be combined with a few lazy days on the beach at Manual Antonio or a stay at a working ranch.

When to Visit

Costa Rica is a great year round destination, although it is advisable to choose the area that has the best weather for the time of year that you want to travel. During July until mid- August the country has a local weather condition called "Canicula", it is like an extended short dry season, in which they experience drier days, much less rain and higher temperatures as well.
