Iceland

Dramatic landscapes, steaming geysers and of course the Northern Lights. Family holidays in Iceland are defined by nature.

As a short hop bucket list destination Iceland and the Northern Lights feature highly for most of us. Iceland is a playground of wonder as you discover the wonderful natural beauty of Iceland’s majestic waterfalls, steaming geysers, warm waters of the Blue Lagoon geo thermal spa, the UNESCO Heritage site of Þingvellir National Park and of course, the Aurora Borealis, Northern Lights.

Why we love Iceland family holidays

  • See the Northern Lights

  • Visit the dramatic beaches on the Atlantic Coast

  • Swim in a geothermal pool

  • Play in one of the many waterfalls

  • Do a spot of whale watching

  • Become a musher on a dog sledding tour

  • Visit one of the countrys Puffin Colonys

The landscape and geography of Iceland features prominently in the uniqueness of hotels across this Nordic country. Staying in the tiny but nonetheless welcoming, and interesting Viking city of Reykjavik is a great base for many of the country’s key attractions. Adventure themed mountain resorts, some conversions from sheep farms, now luxury retreats cater for a range of activities. For the most unique of experiences a night sleeping like an eskimo in your own igloo gives a fantastic view of the converted Northern Lights.

A whale Watching experience on Faxafloi Bay where Humpback and Minke Whales along with Dolphins and Harbour Porpoises dance in the waters is a great experience if you visit the country later in the year. The local puffins, Arctic terns and Gannets are just a few of the birds that can be seen throughout the country.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Iceland should be guided by what you hope to see. The Northern Lights can be viewed from December to April. This is also the time to partake in a number of winter activites. Whereas the summer season of July and August is when the country basks in warmth, the daylight hours are long and all attractions are open. Christmas also offers a sense of warmth in an otherwise season of cold with it’s colourful Christmas Markets.
