Jordan
Jordan is a land of ancient wonders and a unique family holiday destination.
Jordan is a small country steeped in history and culture and the perfect backdrop for an amazing and unique family holiday adventure. This is an authentic and historical land full of ancient wonders, impressive World Heritage sites, Bedouin camps and stunning desert landscapes. Castles, the Dead Sea, vast desert wadis and of course Petra, your family holiday to Jordan won’t be short of material for a school project or two.
Located in Northern Arabia and almost entirely landlocked by its neighbours, the only coastline is the Red Sea in the Gulf of Aqaba in the south-west of the country and is only 16 miles long.
Jordan is a safe and inspiring family holiday location where a genuinely warm hospitality is guaranteed and people go out of their way to make children feel welcomed. It is a country that is still considered a little off the beaten track but it has so many phenomenal things to see. With little effort, children will find plenty to keep their curiosity peeked.
Petra is arguably one of the most famous sites in Jordan, with the awe inspiring Treasury that is revealed as you reach the end of the sunken path of the Siq. It was after all the backdrop to the final scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. The rest of the site’s monuments and buildings, like the Colonnaded Street and the Street of Facades - a city cut into a rock face are just as intriguing. Little Petra is also one not to be missed, here it’s far less busy than the main site but you will have fun being able to explore the caves more freely. Both sites are best visited in the early morning before the crowds and the heat of the midday sun (if you are travelling in warmer months).
Amman is often only used as a stopover, but is home to a Citadel that makes it one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. A walk around the souks of the city will give children a fascinating insight in to everyday life. A small journey north to Jerrash will find you in one of the best preserved Roman Cities, a well timed visit here may give you the opportunity to witness the reenactment of a gladiator dual. Enjoying a night under the stars in the dramatic desert of Wadi Rum; and visit the all important biblical sites of Mount Nebo, Bethany and Madaba.
